Capulin Volcano- information and images from National Park Service Pamphlet

History:

Capulin is the cone of a volcano that erupted between 56,000 and 62,000 years ago. This cinder cone is a vestige of a great period of volcanic eruptions that began 9 million years ago. Capulin formed during the last period of activity in the greater volcanic area called Raton-Clayton volcanic field. Its erruption capped the raton mesa that you can see from throughout the a great portion of the Trinidad area of southern Colorado.

Capulin's conical form rises more then 1300 feet above the surrounding plains to approximately 8,182 feet above sea level. The mountain consists chiefly of loose cinders, ash, and other rock debris that where spewed out in the eruptions. The symmetry of Capulin volcano was preserved because the lava did not flow from the main crater but a "boca"( Spanish for mouth) located at the western base of the volcano. After the eruptions ceased, vegetation gained a foothold on the steep and unstable slopes stabilizing it and eventually forming dense root growth which transformed the volcanic rock to soil.
