4 seasons- Comfortable Summers with low humidity and temperate Winters :
Climate information for the
South Central part of Colorado
Las Animas ,Huerfano , and Freemont Counties are located in the south-central part of Colorado, extending east from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains onto the Great Plains. This location results in a pleasing semiarid climate with an average of approximately 14 inches of precipitation per year. The elevation, the southern location, the 300 plus days when the sun shines, and the low humidity combine to provide a comfortable moderate and dry climate for healthful year-round living.
Weather extremes are usually scattered and of short duration. Summers are usually warm and pleasant with daytime temperatures normally in the 70's and 80's range. There's about three weeks in July where the temperatures rise into the 90's a few times but it over pretty quick. Because of the elevation, a dusting of snow can occur as early as mid-September, but comfortable weather lasts well into December. Severe cold is normally of short duration, and warmer days are scattered throughout most of the winter so that you can enjoy all the recreational activities that are available in the area. The dry air makes both the heat and the cold seem much less severe than in other regions of the country where the humidity tends to run much higher.
April and May are the wettest months, each averaging more then 3.5 inches of precipitation . October through March, the cooler months, each average less then 1" of precipitation, varying from a 1' dusting of snow to 15" snowfall. Due to the mild temperature though, this snowfall accumulation diminishes rapidly.
